The route to Tungnath starts from Govindghat and ends at Panwali Dwar. The route is not that difficult, but it’s quite long – around 22 km. The main trekking route is through Panchachuli forest and passes through the forest reserve of Tungnath.
The total time taken to reach Tungnath will be around 15-20 hours if you keep a steady pace. You should plan extra time so that you can enjoy a bit of sightseeing. It takes 2 days to reach Roopkund from Panchachuli. The trek to Roopkund takes around 4-5 hours.
Once in Tungnath you can take up treks to Hanuman Chatti and then head towards Gaura Parvat, which is famous for its waterfalls. This trekking route is one of its kind – it extends through the forest and is hardly used by anyone. In fact, there is no tourist facility available anywhere on this trek. So if you’re fussy about staying in hotels then another trek may be a better option for you.

Best Time For Tungnath Trek in Uttarakhand
The best time for Tungnath trek is when the temple is open in the month of May (summer) and September (monsoon). If you are visiting or trekking outside of these seasons, you may be required to hike the entire Tungnath trail .

The temple at Tungnath is open from May 15 to June 15. The first day of the month is auspicious and most local people climb up the temple to pay their prayers.
Tungnath Trek Itinerary
Day 01:- Haridwar/Rishikesh – Chopta
Start for Chopta ( Approx 240 km one way/11 hrs drive). After arriving at chopta check in your pre book hotel/ Camp. Overnight at Chopta.
Day 02:- Chopta – Tungnath – Chopta
After having breakfast, meet your local guide and start your trek for Tungnath temple, which is a 4 km trek one way. Later you can trek down to your camp/ lodge in Chopta. Overnight at chopta.
Day 03:- Chopta – Haridwar/Rishikesh
After breakfast you can enjoy the Chopta Valley and drive to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Evening drop at hotel/Station.

You must seek the blessings of the holy Tugnath temple. People mostly suggest not to visit the temple during December as it is mostly not open. The reason being the area receives heavy snowfall and the idol of Lord Shiva is shifted to the Mukku Village. Pilgrims can visit the temple during the summers at the end of April but the doors are shut in November.

- Avoiding or preventing altitude sickness is one of the most important things to do when you are trekking in Himalayan regions. The major causes of altitude sickness are high-altitude pulmonary oedema, cerebral oedema and hypoxia.
- Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness and poor sleep. For mild cases where you are feeling well enough to continue on your journey, immediate descent may be possible but treatment is required for severe cases.
- Carry snacks to munch on, for instance, chocolates, biscuits, nuts, etc. You will also need to reach higher terrain where there is a reliable water supply.
- Carry extra clothing to wear in the event that you sweat and need to change, for instance, cotton clothes for summer season and woolen clothes for winter season.
